The focus of FOT is to promote walking. FOT is a non-governmental and non-political organisation of individuals. FOT co-operates with other organisations with similar aims to that of FOT.
The focus of FOT is to promote the interests of pedestrians in urban and traffic planning.
FOT aims for cities and other urban areas to develop so that walking becomes an obvious and attractive mode of transport. Currently, fifteen percent of all passenger journeys are made on foot. This proportion can increase, even double, but it requires urban development and traffic planning that prioritize pedestrians. The first and last part of a trip is almost always done on foot.
Pedestrians are the most heterogeneous category of road users, with the most varied conditions. Special consideration must be given to children, the elderly, and the disabled to ensure their accessibility and safety. The city must be accessible to everyone.
Pedestrians are exposed to significant risks in the traffic environment. Every year, about a hundred pedestrians die in traffic and fall accidents. Many thousands require hospital admission for inpatient care, and several tens of thousands need to visit an emergency department. Road safety work must be reoriented. The Government and Parliament must take responsibility. Despite this, pedestrians receive the least of society’s resources for road safety. Road safety efforts must be reoriented towards pedestrians, and the government and parliament must take responsibility for protecting them.
The mission of FOT is to:
- Identify risks and problems affecting all groups of the pedestrians
- Distribute relevant information to improve walking conditions
- Promoting liveable spaces for pedestrians on streets and other public areas
- Working for a human friendly and sustainable society
The vision of FOT is that:
- Everybody should be able to walk freely and comfortably in a secure, beautiful and lively urban environment
- No one should be hurt or injured while walking
- The pedestrians should not be subordinated to other vehicles including cyclists
- The pedestrians should be the final arbiter as to the success or failure of town planning
The target of FOT is to:
- Influence planning practices
- Stimulate studies and investigations
- Engage in discussions
- Exchange experiences and knowledge nationally and internationally
